PEOPLE in the borough of Stockton who feel they struggle with everyday literacy and numeracy are being urged to boost their basic skills.

There is a dedicated team on hand to offer advice, information and support to adults who would like to improve their skills, including spelling, writing and maths.

The team, based with Stockton Borough Council's adult education service, can arrange for people to attend classes near where they live or put them in touch with providers who are able to meet their needs.

Anne Smart, the council's skills for life outreach worker, said: "Reading, writing and maths are the essential skills we use every day to help us function at work and home.

"Without these skills it would be difficult to help children with their homework, improve employment prospects, handle finances and household budgets and fill in forms."

The team can also give basic skills awareness-raising sessions to groups or organisations.

Volunteers are always needed to become involved in signposting people to the relevant organisations and to help with promotions.

Helpers are particularly needed in Billingham, Portrack and Tilery, Parkfield and Hardwick.
