BUSINESSES across the region have pledged their support for plans to change the name of Teesside International Airport.

The airport's major shareholder, Peel Airports, is considering creating a new identity and changing the name to Durham Tees Valley Airport.

The firm believes the re-branding would boost its global marketability and secure new investment.

Research by the North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC) showed that businesses felt the name change made commercial sense.

A survey of more than 800 firms found that, while 73 per cent had a sentimental or personal preference for the present name, the majority would accept change if this was in the interests of the airport and could help to attract business and investment.

The chamber had expressed doubts when the proposed re-branding was announced, but is now backing the idea.

George Cowcher, NECC chief executive, said: "This is certainly an issue that has touched a nerve with our members.

"While many would personally prefer the name to remain unchanged, we recognise that it may be in the best commercial interests of the airport to look at alternatives.

"A successful and vibrant airport is vital to Tees Valley and if this helps the long-term future of the airport, then it is one we support. However, we must make certain that before any changes are implemented, they are the right ones for the airport.

"It is vital that the proper groundwork is done first and like any other major commercial decision, this is something that the airport and its partners need to base on sound market research."

The final decision will be made by the six local authority shareholders in the airport, Darlington, Stockton, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, Durham, and Redcar and Cleveland.
