PEOPLE are being warned to be on their guard against crime in the run-up to Christmas.

Victim Support in Darlington is urging people to take a common sense approach to Christmas shopping to foil opportunist thieves.

Last December, there were 102 burglaries in Darlington, 11 thefts from people, two pickpocket offences, 24 bike thefts and 48 thefts from cars.

Sandra Watson, Victim Support co-ordinator, said thieves take advantage of shoppers who are carrying more money than usual at this time of year and will look for the easiest target.

She advised women against carrying their purses in backpacks, because it is easier for thieves to open the bags without being noticed.

Leaving shopping in parked cars, instead of out of sight in the boot, can also provide an easy target for thieves.

Ms Watson said care should also be taken when wrapping gifts at home, because boxes left out for refuse collection were an advertisement to thieves.

"People need to break the boxes down and put them in bin liners," she said.

Homes should have a timer on the lights so they come on in the evening, even if people are out.

Victims of crime can contact Darlington Victim Support, in the town's Duke Street, for help and advice on (01325) 282966.
