A PRIMARY school was officially opened yesterday by the Archbishop of York.

St Francis of Assisi Church of England School, at Ingleby Barwick, opened its doors in February to 71 pupils.

There are now 117 on the roll and it is expected to reach its 210 capacity in about three years.

Dr David Hope yesterday led a short service in the school hall, followed by the release of blue and gold balloons each carrying a prayer written by the pupils for their school.

He then planted a Christmas tree, which will be decorated by the youngsters every year.

Dr Hope said: "Ingleby Barwick became a parish with its own vicar three years ago, and I am delighted it now has a Church of England primary school as well.

"The school and the church centre belong to Ingleby Barwick and I know they are both of benefit to the whole community."

Paul Bramley, headteacher at the school, said: "We are all delighted to have been involved in the creation of this school.

"Ingleby Barwick has given us a very warm welcome, and with the support of the church and local people, we feel there are exciting times ahead for everyone connected with the school."

A plaque near the school entrance will commemorate Dr Hope's visit.
