Part-time footballer Jonathan Dunn is dreaming of glory after being plucked from a lowly pub team to play in Italy's top league.

The 20-year-old midfielder is rubbing shoulders with Serie A stars, and has former Sunderland player Tore Andre Flo to thank for his big break.

Only weeks ago, Jonathan was facing the likes of The Cauld Lad and Silksworth Oaks, in the Wearside Combination League.

Jonathan, from Tunstall, got the call after captaining Sunderland pub team Substance FC.

Striker Flo discovered the youngster's talent through his family nanny, 19-year-old Beth Keillor, who is Jonathan's girlfriend.

Jonathan said: "I got a call out of the blue to come over to Sienna for a trial and that was a month ago.

"I owe him a lot for this opportunity. At the moment, I am training with the first team squad, with a possible view to a permanent move."

Jonathan had just returned from a week's trial with First Division Rotherham United when he was told about the Italian move.

Friends and family still cannot believe what has happened to the former GNVQ student who was doing part-time bar work for his father, Dave.

Substance FC manager Kevin Stoker said: "When he told us what had happened we thought it was a wind-up. But you could tell he had something. He is quick on the ball, reads the game, puts himself about and is obviously fit."
