More than 150 pupils at St Michael's RC School, in Billingham, are taking part in the musical Fiddler on the Roof.

It is the ninth musical to be performed by the school and follows productions of My Fair Lady, Oliver and Little Shop of Horrors. Head of drama Angela Parnell is directing the show with head of music Jeremy McMurray.

Ms Parnell said: "Rehearsals have gone really well and staff and pupils have worked very hard. The set looks great and our first performance has almost sold out."

Headteacher Joe White said: "I have heard the music each evening as rehearsals have been taking place and have popped into the hall at times for a preview. It is a very challenging production but once again staff and pupils have risen to the challenge."

The musical is set in a Russian village and tells the story of daughters who go against tradition and marry for love.

Alex Smallwood plays the girls' father, Teyve. Rebecca Clayton plays his wife, Golde, and Kirsty Leighton is matchmaker, Yente.

The musical will be performed on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £4.50 for adults, and £3.50 for children or concessions.

Family tickets for two adults and two children cost £14. They are available from the school in Beamish Road, Billingham, by telephoning (01642) 870003.
