A PUPPY had a lucky escape when a passer-by found her cowering at the side of a road on Sunday.

At first the three-month-old dog was mistaken for a fox, but then the man realised it was a stray dog and took it to the Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre in Sadberge, near Darlington.

The puppy, which staff have named Ena, was very frightened and tired, as well as being covered in fleas.

Centre manager Catherine Gillie said: "Ena had a very lucky escape. Mr Ankers, from Ferryhill, who kindly brought her in, found her on an unlit and secluded road near Hurworth Burn Boarding Kennels. Apparently she was cowering in the dark on a grass verge, too terrified to move, which was probably to her benefit. Otherwise it is horrid to think what could of happened to her."

Ena is looking for a new home, where her owners will be able to help her recover from her ordeal.

She will be neutered, microchipped and vaccinated, and will have six weeks free insurance with Pet Plan.

Anyone who is interested in providing Ena, or any other rescue dog, with a home, is asked to telephone Dogs Trust Darlington on (01325) 333114.
