TWO of the country's premier storytellers will entertain children at a new festival.

Ten Durham libraries will take part in the week-long festival for children and families, aimed at encouraging young children to read.

Award-winning professional storyteller and author Liz Weir will join children's book illustrator Steve Weatherill, the creator of the Baby Goz series, for the event starting on February 16.

Stories will also be told by the Early to Books team, featuring an interactive storytime of songs, rhymes, toys and books. There will also be family art activities supported by the Aim High project.

Peterlee Library will hold a session on February 18 for parents who want to improve their storytelling skills. Ms Weir will give tips on the best way to tell a story.

All activities are free, and the event is supported through the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.

Library divisional manager Sheila Owens: "We are all so excited about this festival.

"It has quality events especially for young children and their families. It is going to be great fun, and libraries are going to be noisy that week."

Libraries taking part are Blackhall, Easington Colliery, Horden, Murton, Peterlee, Seaham, Shotton, Thornley, Wheatley Hill and Wingate.
