BRIAN Robinson of the South Durham Amateur Boxing Club has reached the next round of the ABA championships.

He beat Paul Malcolms at Marton Country Club, near Middlesbrough, in the last round.

Club colleague Gary Fox drew England international Stuart Kennedy in his match and came a close second.

The club will be cheering Brian on in the next round at Marton today.

The club also had successes in the North East Schoolboy Championships.

Terry Fox received a bye to the final in his age group, where he was beaten by Gavin Foot.

Clubmate Karl Thompson, 15, was crowned North-East schoolboy champion.

Jeff Saunders Junior, 12, also claimed his first title.

Because of the large number of young people in the club who are aged between eight and 11, coach Jeff Saunders Senior is opening a Kid Gloves scheme.

The gym will be open between 5pm and 6pm on Tuesday and Thursdays so coaches can spend more time with new starters.
