THE world's first machine gun will go on show in Durham next month.
Weapons expert Martin Pegler will give an illustrated talk at the Durham Light Infantry Museum and Durham Art Gallery on Saturday, March 6, with a Maxim machine gun.
Dubbed the Queen of the Battlefield, the Maxim was the first machine gun made and revolutionised warfare.
It was named after its inventor, American Hiram Maxim, who was told by a friend in Paris in 1881 that if he wanted to make a lot of money, he should invent something that would enable Europeans to "cut each other's throat with greater facility".
Mr Pegler, of the Royal Armouries Museum, Leeds, will give a talk from 2pm.
Tickets are available in advance from the DLI at Aykley Heads, Durham at £3.50 with a £2.50 concession and £1.50 for season ticket holders.
