DURHAM'S city centre housing office is being transformed into a council one- stop shop.

The office, next to Millennium Square, in Claypath, closed on Friday and is expected to be shut for several months.

When it reopens people will have access to all council services and those of other public bodies.

The city's first one-stop shop, The Linden Centre, was opened at Coxhoe Leisure Centre last May.

A similar facility will be built near Meadowfield Leisure Centre in a £2.25m scheme that will also see affordable housing built across the district.

A council spokesman said inquiries for the Claypath office would be dealt with at a temporary office in the former Tourist Information Centre, in the Market Place, while the refurbishment took place.

"DurhamCityinfo, customer service, is an evolving section, which is bringing about a fundamental change in the relationship between the council and its customers,'' he added.
