A MAN who won a competition with a "green" pledge, has been presented with an nvironmentally-friendly fridge - delivered on a milk float.

Trevor Dredge, from Coulby Newham, Middlesbrough, won a Middlesbrough Council competition to encourage people to come up with promises to help combat climate change.

The contest was designed to inform people about how they can cut down on greenhouse gas emissions, caused largely by burning fossil fuels to create energy.

Mr Dredge completed his personal climate pledge and it was drawn from 200 others for the prize of a Zanussi fridge.

Mr Dredge came up with pledges such as turning his central heating down by 1c, using a whistling gas-hob kettle and replacing his ten-year-old appliances. These, and other intentions, would save him £130 a year in fuel bills.

In keeping with the environment-theme, the fridge was delivered to his home on Sunnyside yesterday on a reconstructed, 30-year-old milk float, which had been saved from the scrap-heap by Middlesbrough Environment City (MEC) and runs off a battery.

Paul Taylor, from MEC, said in April the milk float will be used in a scheme in Middlesbrough to pick up garden waste from homes, convert it to compost and then take it back to them, free of charge.

Mr Taylor said: "It's an ex-dairy vehicle which we've basically converted into a green waste vehicle.

"It's 30-years-old, but it's been completely rebuilt and it will be buzzing around Middlesbrough all summer."
