A competition is encouraging musical youngsters to hit the right note.

Pupils aged seven to 11 from Pelton Community, Chester-le-Street CE and Red Primary schools, in Chester-le-Street, and St Margaret's CE School, in Durham, are taking part in a musical challenge.

The competition, devised by Pelton's performing arts director Edward Jackson, involves solo singing, choir and instrumental ensemble events. It started last Wednesday and is due to finish on March 24.

Mr Jackson said: "The idea is to encourage music across County Durham and get more youngsters interested in it. Sport is a very big thing in the North-East but music is being ignored.

"I'm hoping that next year the competition will be extended to 16 schools.''

In the first leg of the competition, St Margaret's won the vocal solo and instrumental ensemble events, the school tops the table with five points, and Chester-le-Street CE won the choir event.

The next leg will be held on Wednesday at Chester-le-Street CE.
