A DISUSED factory unit could be transformed into a children's play centre.

The former Susie Radin plant, in Crook, has been empty since the clothing factory shut about four years ago, with a loss of 108 jobs.

But a local couple hope to lease the unit and open it is a family attraction, with play and entertainment facilities for youngsters, that would employ about ten people.

Mark and Claire Renwick, of Billy Hall Farm, Crook, are in the process of securing rental of the property, which is still leased by Susie Radin Ltd, but say gaining planning permission would be a big step towards starting their business.

The centre would be a new venture for the couple. Mr Renwick is a builder and Mrs Renwick has been studying mathematics with a view to training as a teacher.

Their six year-old daughter, Chloe, is the inspiration behind the proposal, because they feel there is not enough recreational provision for young children in the district and often travel outside the area to similar facilities.

Mrs Renwick said: "We travel miles to use similar facilities and feel it would offer something new to the area.

"We are very excited about the prospect, but it is in the early stages and depends on securing the lease and planning permission."

The plans for the 900 square metre unit would include a soft play and ball pool area, themed party rooms and catering facilities for customers. There could also be a small computer and games room for recreation, and a sports pitch for five-a-side football and basketball.

If approved by Wear Valley District Council's development control committee on Thursday, the centre would cater mainly for children under 12, which parents would be responsible for supervising.

Residents of neighbouring homes have raised concerns about the generation of noise from the centre, which planning officers predict will not cause a major disturbance.

Objectors also fear the unit is dangerously close to the A689, but council planning officers say the 30mph speed limit, the good network of footpaths and parental supervision mean the road can be crossed safety.

The officers have recommend that the plans be approved on Thursday.
