THE fundraising effort of a family support network seeking to open a base in Wear Valley has been launched with a charity night.

The Crook and District Parent Carers group, which offers support to families of children with special needs, marked its first anniversary at the weekend by launching an appeal at a social night.

Organisers hope to raise enough money to secure their own premises, with specialist equipment, a sensory and therapy room for children, relaxation rooms and social events for families.

Founder members Val Fairhurst and Christine Beard said the social night on Saturday, in the Elite Hall, Crook, was a tremendous start to their campaign.

Mrs Fairhurst said: "The turnout was excellent and word is spreading about our group, which is good to reach other families and to help raise money.

"We are grateful to businesses and locals for their support, and the band, Tempest, which performed for free on Saturday. We raised £1,600, which is a good start towards the target, of around £100,000."
