FAMILIES and friends gather on Monday to mourn two people killed in accidents on North-East roads.

Amy Longworth, 13, was hit by a car as she attempted to cross a slip road off the A182 Washington Highway, in Washington, last Saturday.

She was struck by a Nissan Terrano, driven by a 33-year-old man, and died from her injuries at the scene, near the Galleries shopping centre.

A friend, who was with Amy at the time of the accident, and the motorist were unhurt.

Amy, of Ayton Village, Washington, a pupil at Oxclose Community School, was one of five children of parents Jackie and George.

Her funeral takes place at Washington Parish Church, Washington Village, at 9am, followed by burial at Washington Cemetery.

Meanwhile, a funeral also takes place on Monday for an RAF serviceman killed in a road accident in the early hours last Sunday.

Shaun Brown was declared dead at the University Hospital of North Durham, in Durham, after being cut free from his car by firefighters.

The Toyota MR2 left the A1052 road and struck a brick wall at Lumley Park Burn Bridge, at Bournmoor, near Chester-le-Street.

A 22-year-old man from Shiney Row, a front seat passenger, was released after hospital treatment.

Mr Brown, also 22, of Station Avenue North, in nearby Fence Houses, was stationed at RAF Wittering, in Peterborough, and saw service in Iraq during the recent conflict.

The son of Julia and Ian Brown, he had a sister, Lauren, and was engaged to fiancee, Leeanne.

His funeral takes place at St Barnabas Church, Bournmoor, at 12.30pm, followed by burial at Houghton-le-Spring Cemetery.
