SIR BOBBY ROBSON faces a Dutch treat when he returns to former club PSV Eindhoven in a fortnight's time after Newcastle eased through to the last eight of the UEFA Cup.

Two-goal skipper Alan Shearer killed off any lingering hope Real Mallorca had of salvaging this fourth-round tie at their Son Moix stadium last night.

Shearer's cool opportunism only 37 seconds after half-time gave Newcastle a four-goal cushion and there was no way back for the Balearics outfit.

Goalkeeper and captain Miki Garro let his side down when his attempted clearance ran straight to Shearer, who curled the ball beyond him from around 20 yards.

And in-the-news striker Craig Bellamy added a second in the 77th minute after only a minute on the field as a replacement for Wales teammate Gary Speed.

Bellamy broke clear with customary pace from inside his own half before clipping the ball out of the reach of the hapless Miki.

Shearer then took his European goal tally for the Magpies to 16 when he tapped into an empty net from Olivier Bernard's cross two minutes from time.

As anticipated, Bellamy - still trying to shake off a hamstring injury - started on the bench as manager Robson stuck with Shola Ameobi alongside Shearer.

Bellamy's Newcastle Airport departure lounge clash with coach John Carver had domintated the headlines in the build-up to the game, but the Magpies had been quick to draw a line under the incident.

Mallorca's undisciplined collapse on Tyneside a fortnight earlier - when they had Edu Moya sent off and seven other players booked - had suppressed interest in this tie among the locals.

But the erratic form of their favourites, and incessant rain for much of the day, hardly helped.

After losing the first leg 4-1, Luis Aragones' lowly La Liga side won 4-2 here against Champions League quarter-finalists Deportivo La Coruna.

But the see-saw nature of their season was summed up last weekend when they crashed to a 5-1 defeat away to title-chasing Valencia.

With Moya, fellow defender David Cortes and midfielder Gonzalo Colsa all suspended, and injuries and ineligibilities to boot, Aragones was forced into making changes.

Defender Federico Lussenhoff and midfielders Txomin Nagore and Anderson Nene, were the only three players to survive in the starting line-up from the first meeting.

The most notable absentee was Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o, who started on the bench after scoring against Valencia with a penalty.

But Arnold Bruggink, well known to Robson from his time in charge at PSV, was back from injury to bolster the attack.

The 2,500-strong contingent of Geordie fans generated most of the atmosphere at a sparsely-populated arena.

They almost had something to cheer in only the second minute when Newcastle won a free-kick and Laurent Robert's raking, long-range effort forced an uncertain save from Miki.

The Magpies threatened again when Jermaine Jenas won the ball in midfield and evaded a challenge to finish with an angled shot that Miki managed to touch wide.

But there was a scare for Newcastle in the 13th minute when the home side broke and Bruggink emerged unmarked in the box to curl a shot which was turned over with some style by Shay Given.

As Newcastle became a little ragged in possession, Real began to probe deeper, but a left-wing cross from Toni Gonzalez was overhit and sailed beyond the frustrated Bruggink.

The Dutchman then tested Given at his near post with a shot from an acute angle and wasted a headed opportunity before Nene's low drive rebounded off the United keeper, who gathered at the second attempt.

Jonathan Woodgate, however, was the rock at the heart of the Newcastle defence and after he performed a crucial goalmouth block from Poli, only a woeful finish by Toni Gonzalez at the back post spared the Magpies when the ball spun free.

Shearer's lightning strike after the break stunned the hosts, but Given had to effect stops from Nene and Eto'o, who replaced Ivan Ramis in the 53rd minute.

And when the Newcastle defence went to sleep four minutes later, Given saved with his legs from Alejandro Campano before the substitute returned the ball from the right and Jesus Perera blazed over.

Meanwhile, PSV, who beat Newcastle home and away in the Champions League in 1997, booked a reunion with Robson after overcoming Auxerre at the Philips Stadion.

Result: Real Mallorca 0 Newcastle United 3.
