THERE may be a glimmer of hope for two of Harrogate's sports club after a frank exchange of views with the council.

Harrogate Rugby Club and Harrogate Town Football Club are facing uncertain futures because of question marks over their grounds.

The rugby club has already sold its training ground at Claro Road to a housing developer in anticipation of its move.

But this decision has been halted because the Environment Secretary has ruled against any relocation by the club to an out-of-town site.

This decision also has implications for Harrogate Town Football Club. The club is poised to clinch a place in the new-look Northern Conference League, but the it's stadium on Wetherby Road is too small for match official requirements.

Harrogate Borough Council has indicated that its hands are tied by the ruling and it would find it hard to help.

But, after a meeting on Wednesday, spokesmen for all three sides emerged to indicate some progress had been made although no one would reveal specific details.

Football club chairman and former Leeds United director Bill Fotherby said: "We can now see a future and a way forward. This latest meeting gives us encouragement to know that, should we progress up the league, there is a definite vision for a new ground in the town."

Rugby club chairman Frank Carter said: "I am pleased we have been given the opportunity to discuss at least one of the options we have for the future."

A working group will now be formed to discuss details.

Harrogate Borough Council leader Mike Gardner said: "There may be a way forward which will benefit the town, both clubs and community. I am looking forward to continuing these invaluable discussions where the three parties are all on the same side."
