AN attempt to build homes at a picture-postcard tourist site has been rejected.

The latest plans, beneath the 100ft Grade II-listed railway viaduct over the River Nidd, in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, involved demolishing a restaurant and cottage and building three homes and two apartments.

It was rejected by Harrogate Borough Council.

The application, by Leo Campagna, the owner of Da Mario's Restaurant, at Waterside, Knaresborough, follows a number of attempts to redevelop the site.

After one was submitted, residents paid £15,000 to successfuly oppose the scheme at a public inquiry.

An independent government inspector turned down the appeal, saying development would detract from the viaduct.

The most famous view of the site, captured on countless calendars and postcards, is from high above the river in the grounds of Knaresborough Castle.

When the latest application was heard on Tuesday, Harrogate Borough Council planning officer Neville Watson said that development would impact on views of the viaduct.
