A CLUB in Chester-le-Street has been bowled over by a donation for equipment.

The grant of nearly £900 from Age Concern means more people can play at Chester West and Central Bowling Club. It will be used to buy another carpet bowling mat and a set of bowls.

The club has been going for about six months and attracts more than 20 members to the Bullion Hall, Chester-le-Street, every Friday afternoon.

Member Malcolm Bell, of Delaval, Chester-le-Street, said: "This is great for the club because it is getting so popular people were having to wait for a game.

"It is a great way to get out of the house and we have people of all ages coming here. You meet people and there is a bit of friendly competition. It is a lovely afternoon out."

The club is run by Chester West and Central Community Project.

Age concern development worker Tracy Freeman joined members for a game.

She said: "It is gentile but there is a skill involved too.

"It is great fun and people seem to be having a real laugh."

"It is really important to support community groups that are engaged in promoting health and social opportunities for people as well as giving them a fun day out."

The club meets on Fridays between 2pm and 4pm. Membership is £2.50 and it costs 50p a session. A cup of tea and a biscuit is available for 20p.
