ALL youngsters are taught the importance of road safety - but the risks are multiplied for those with a visual impairment.

For that reason, Siemens Traffic Controls Ltd has donated and installed a pelican crossing at Henshaws College, in Harrogate.

The college offers further education to young people with a visual impairment, who have additional difficulties or disabilities.

The crossing has been installed within the college grounds to give students the chance to learn road safety in a safe environment.

Principal Jane Cole said: said: "With statistics still showing shockingly high numbers of road fatalities and serious injuries, the importance of teaching road safety skills has never been more important.

"Obviously, the risks for those with a visual impairment are potentially so much higher, and we want to ensure our students have as much information as possible.

"This exciting resource will give students the opportunity to develop safe road crossing techniques in a quiet, controlled environment before they transfer those skills into the wider community."
