BROADCASTER Paddy MacDee got more than he bargained for when he agreed to present prizes at a charity golf day.

The BBC Radio Newcastle presenter will hand out the prizes after a sell-out charity golf day at Hexham Golf Course on Friday, May 7, to raise money for the Children's Foundation.

But when he admitted to fundraisers Carol Bennett and Natalina Sutherland that he had never played golf in his life, the ladies whisked him off to Hexham Golf Course for an impromptu lesson.

Ms Bennett, the charity's regional fundraising manager, said: "Playing golf is a popular pastime with more to it than just hitting a ball and that's why Natalina and I decided to give Paddy a few lessons.

"We felt we owe it to our golfers taking part to get him up to scratch, even though that is proving to be easier said than done.

"We can't possibly have anyone presenting prizes who has never picked up a club before. I'm sure that after some intensive training Paddy will be hooked on golf for life."

It is the fourth golf event the charity has organised and is expected to raise about £4,000.

Mr MacDee said: "I never realised golf was such hard work. I think my handicap is the golf club - it is nearly as big as me.

"I do like the clothes though, so I may keep them, and I think the birdies look particularly fetching in their outfits."
