Durham County: Durham County suffered a home whitewash defeat when they entertained South Yorkshire in the Region One Inter-Counties League.

The Durham Men's A team lost 24-20 with the home scorers being Dave Harrop and Steve Thompson with three wins each, Ian Staines, James Evans, Trevor Walton, Michael Cockburn, Kevin Rainbow and Rob Hogarth with two wins each, whilst Simon Baker and Lee Holdsworth added one each.

The Durham men's B team lost 21-23 with Adrian Kavanagh, Dave Ferguson, Gary Spooner and Paul Campbell scoring three points each, Dave Castledene, Barrty Dowson and Andrew Mole scoring two each, whilst Andrew Tennant, Nick Veuger and Chris Beswick added one each.

The Durham Ladies were beaten 28-16. Helen Littlewood was the only Durham player from any of the teams to finish with 100% record when she won all four of her games. The other Durham scorers were Alison Harrop and Dawn Small with three each, Sue Seal and Angela Gorman with two each, whilst Debbie Seaward and Clare Tritton added one each.

Durham County's next match is away to East Yorkshire on Sunday, 6 June.

Bishop Auckland League

The two remaining unbeaten teams came close to defeat last week when Tow Law new Market just edged through at Bishop Auckland RAFA in the decider and Henknowle Manor had to take the final three points to clinch their home victory over Bishop Auckland Derby.

Bishop Auckland RAFA had two singles points from David Gaskins with Ronnie Drennan, Bob Chambers and Brian Siddle adding one each, whilst the New Market levelled with two points from David Craggs and one each from John Beveridge, Anthony Hird and Shaun Umpelby. Anthony Hird and Shaun Umpelby took the doubles for the New Market but Bob Chambers levelled the match by beating David Craggs in the first captain's game. However Craggs took his revenge in the decider to retain the New Market's unbeaten tag.

Bishop Auckland derby shared the singles at Henknowle Manor when they had two points from Paul Stewart and one each from Andrew Delve, Wayne King and Colin Gash. The Manor levelled with two points from Steve Webb and one each from Bill Turner, John Collinson and Peter Mernor. The Manor then completed victory by taking the double through Bob Webb and Bill Turner and the two captains' points when Steve Webb beat Paul Stewart.

The Manor lead the table by twelve points with Crook Travellers Rest two points behind. Shildon Royal George are a further two points adrift, but are two ahead of the New Market.

The new season will begin on Wednesday, 12 May when twenty-four teams will play in two divisions.

Division Two - Willington Brewer's Droop v Willington Cottles; Crook Spitfire Club v Crook White Swan B; Crook Jelly's Bar A v Crook Golden Fleece; Howden Australian v Crook Jelly's Bar B; Crook Queen's Head B v Crook Surtees; Crook King's Head v Stanley Earl Derby.

County Super League

Newton Aycliffe recorded their first win of the season when they visited Durham and won by the points collected at either side of the interval.

Simon Baker opened the scoring for Durham but Richie Bellwood, Shaun Foxton and Tommy Francis moved the visitors ahead.. Clare Tritton and Dave Ferguson levelled the match but Durham went into the break one down when Carl Little took the last frame of the first half for Newton Aycliffe.

The visitors increased their lead when Richie Bellwood and Carl Little scored their second points to go three ahead. From that point the frames went alternately with Simon Baker, Paul Shutt and Chris Beswick wining for Durham and Gary Spooner and Shaun Foxton keeping Newton Aycliffe on track for their first victory.

Auckland Area League

Bishop Auckland Grand A entertained Bishop Auckland Derby, who got off to the better start with wins from Chris Peacock and a seven-ball victory from Steven Lowther. Rob Dalton pulled one back for the home side but wins from Stuart Milne and Colin Gash saw the Derby open up a three point lead. Shaun Reynolds reduced the deficit by taking the next. Steven Lowther and Andrew Delve increased the visitor's lead to four points and wins from the Grand's Gary McGaskill and the Derby's Wayne King saw it remain that way. Needing a victory to claim the league's A doubles title the Derby's Stuart Milne and Jeff Dixon were fortunate when their opponents missed the black and gifted them the win. Michael Keane and Gary McGaskill took the second doubles for the Grand and David Baglin the captains to leave the final score at 5-8.

Spennymoor Hillingdon were in fine form against the visiting Bishop Auckland Grand B with Ian Smith, Barry Walton, Kenny Smith and Ben Smith all winning both of their singles games, whilst Phil Young was the only visiting scorer with two points. The Grand fought back to take doubles points through David Wilson with Keith Young and Malcolm Cooper with Brian Cable. Barry Walton won the captains to give the home side a 9-4 victory.

Consett Stateside closed the gap at the top to only two points with a match in hand after they almost whitewashed the visiting Ushaw Moor Flass Inn, whilst the leaders, Witton Gilbert White Tun B struggled to beat the visiting Durham Snooker Club by the odd point.
