SUCCESSFUL food firms and community groups joined forces with their local authority at an event showcasing the achievements of remote and rural areas.

The Deeply Rural event at the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes, was organised by Richmondshire District Council.

It followed the awarding of Beacon status to the council last year, for its role in supporting the rural economy and was attended by Countryside Agency, Yorkshire and Humber Regional Assembly, other rural councils and local community groups.

Beacon co-ordinator Kirsty Scott said that since the award the council had been called upon to lend expertise to national events.

"On this occasion, we were able to bring people to our own area so that they could see for themselves some of our achievements," she said.

Among businesses making presentations were the Wensleydale Creamery, Dales Quality Meat, the Hawes Auction Mart and East Borwins Farm Abattoir at Bainbridge.

A number of community success stories were highlighted, including the Wheels 2 Work transport scheme.

Council leader John Blackie said: "We are proud of our success and hope our expertise will be inspiration to others."
