ONE of two schools that have been replaced by an academy is to make way for a housing estate.

Planning officials in Middlesbrough are recommending that Middlesbrough Council's executive back a scheme to demolish Coulby Newham School and replace it with family houses, apartments and bungalows with wheelchair access.

A shortlist of seven builders has been reduced to two, who want to buy the freehold of the school and build more than 100 homes.

The £22m Kings Academy was built to replace Middlesbrough's Coulby Newham and Brackenhoe schools.
