A COUNCILLOR says his bid to save a popular gardening show axed by its organisers is advancing.

Durham City Council cancelled the city's autumn horticultural show, also known as the garden produce show, in its 30th anniversary year.

The Liberal Democrat-controlled authority maintains that entries have fallen in recent years, that the show has exceeded its budget and that there have been access problems.

But the Labour Durham County Councillor for Gilesgate, Peter Thompson, hopes to save the event and hold it in the Durham Room at County Hall, on September 10, 11, and 12, the dates that it was due to have been held on.

Councillor Thompson said that people had come forward to offer to serve on an organising group and that he was asking the city council to pass on lists of competitors and the show's trophies.

"The other heart-warming thing I have heard is that staff at the city council who previously worked voluntarily on the event are happy to do so in the future. The venue is agreed. We hope to have the first meeting of the organising committee in the next two weeks.

"It is not exactly all systems go yet but the valves are beginning to crank into place.''

Coun Thompson said he hoped colleagues would contribute towards running costs from the council funds they are allocated to give to local projects and groups.

He hopes to widen the show's appeal to attract visitors from further afield.

Regular exhibitor Jane Pegram, of Lanchester, said: "I am delighted that Coun Thompson is taking action to ensure that the show carries on.

"It was, and still is, a unique show that allows people from all areas of Durham to compete. I wish him every success.''
