THE skies above the North-East will come alive with colour next month through an International Festival of Kites, Music and Dance.

The event at the Northern Area Playing Fields, Washington, Wearside, on July 3 and 4, will see some of the world's best kitemakers in action.

Kites of all shapes and sizes will be featured, including a 70ft pair of jogger's legs, a 100ft octopus, and the Wigsley Wings display team, who will fly some of the world's largest kites.

Malcolm Goodman, kite consultant to Sunderland City Council, who is responsible for organising the kite flying programme, said: "The festival, now in its 18th year, simply goes from strength to strength.

"It regularly attracts capacity crowds, and is becoming something of a tradition on Wearside, offering a great day out for all the family."

Other festival events include an international mus-ic and dance programme, which provides a chance for schools, community groups and dance schools to showcase their work. This year, the dance programme will feature modern jazz, salsa and contemporary, together with an international theme, including Morris dancers.

In addition, there will be an art and crafts fair.

For the young, a children's village and activity marquee will provide hours of entertainment and fun activities.

The attractions include inflatables and fairground rides.

Admission is free with the entertainment taking place between 11am and 5pm.
