FTSE-listed service company Capita has won a contract with the Royal Mint.

Capita's Darlington site will take orders and inquiries for Royal Mint's specialist coins.

It will be the Royal Mint's call handling partner for a series of high-profile campaigns, including a D-Day Commemorative £5 Crown coin to mark the 60th anniversary of the D-Day Landings.

Both companies said they hoped to expand their partnership in the future.

Capita was chosen for the project because of its ability to call on a pool of staff and vary taking between 5,000 and 50,000 calls per week.

The organisation can increase or decrease its workforce in response to call volumes, a factor that helped it to win the contract.

Phil Sewards, business director, said: "The Royal Mint required a partner capable of handling potentially very large and fluctuating call volumes.

"Through the work Capita does for TV Licensing, the Department for Work and Pensions, Transport for London and the Teachers Pensions Agency, we were able to demonstrate both the expertise and flexibility to take on these campaigns.

Dafydd Jenkins, retail sales director for Collector Coins at the Royal Mint, said: "The flexibility of services available from Capita's Lingfield Point operation was particularly important to us as we expect to grow out customer base significantly and need a partner that can handle the expected growth in orders of our products.

Support services group Capita employs about 400 people in Darlington and 250 on Tyneside,.

The group was told last week it could rejoin the FTSE 100 index following the quarterly review meeting of the Europe Committee, which decides promotions and demotions.

Earlier this year Capita won a deal to manage a call centre in Sheffield for electronics retailer Dixons in a five-year contract worth £90m.
