HORTICULTURAL event organisers can tap into funds to help with running shows, a local authority has announced.

Durham City Council said traditional horticultural and craft shows were an important part of the cultural heritage of the area.

Although it no longer organises its own event, the council can offer grants to other shows in the district to help towards running costs.

Councillor Fraser Reynolds, cabinet portfolio holder for environment and community development, said: "Supporting locally-based horticultural or craft shows throughout the district, rather than organising one larger city-based event, is a positive move that will revitalise such events, add to community spirit and encourage flourishing communities throughout the district."

To qualify for help, shows should cover some or all of the following types of exhibits: vegetables, flowers, flower arranging, floristry, cookery, preserving, home-made country wines, knitting, crocheting, embroidery, soft toys, sewing, pottery, woodcarving, metalwork, decoupage.

Event organisers can obtain an application form by contacting Sarah Vetch at the city council on 0191-301 8692.
