RESIDENTS have been awarded more than £30,000 in grants after uncovering a wildlife haven in the middle of a housing estate.

North Billingham Residents' Association has teamed up with Stockton Borough Council, Billingham Forward and Tees Valley Wildlife Trust to produce a package of measures to secure the long-term future of Cowbridge Beck, which runs through the town.

The team has cleared litter, renovated bridges and built paths to attract people to an area which has a wealth of wild life, including water voles, kingfishers, greenfinch, wagtails and wrens.

The association has also been awarded £27,500 from The Seed Programme, £600 from Huntsman, £1,000 from the Wildlife Trust and £4,662 from the Neighbourhood Renewal Community Chest.

The money will be used to pay for bird boxes, benches, picnic benches and bridges.

Ken Shannon, chairman of the residents' association, said: "It is a hidden gem, right in the middle of a housing estate which nobody has bothered about over the years.

"We are hoping it will become a jewel in the crown."

Further plans include a playground and more tree planting.
