STUDENTS have given the grounds of a sports centre a makeover as part of a work placement.

The 15 youngsters, from Risedale Community College, Catterick Garrison, worked with staff at Colburn sports centre on the two-week project.

They cleared the grassed area of rubble and soil, seeded it and laid cobbles. They also secured the support of Ravensworth Nurseries, near Richmond, which donated 20 bushes.

Chris Gaukroger, who works at the centre, said: "They worked really hard, along with staff from the centre, and the grass areas do look lovely now.

"A lot of people who walk down the path there are telling us how nice it looks. We took some 'before' pictures and the difference is amazing."
