Q I am a widow of 87 who could not get pension Credit because of my savings. However, I receive Attendance Allowance due to my disability. Am I entitled to Carer's Allowance, as I need more care now that my health is deteriorating ?
A No. Carer's Allowance is paid to the person who gives the care, not the person who needs it. So if you have a carer, they may qualify.
Q I have just been awarded Carer's Allowance for looking after my 84-year-old father who receives Attendance Allowance (AA). But who should be getting the AA? I give it to my father, but I know another carer who says it comes to her.
A AA is for the disabled person to spend as they wish. If they cannot act for themselves, another person may be appointed to act for them. That appointee, however, must spend the money on the disabled person.
Q Due to ill health, I only work 20 hours a week, bringing home £408 a month and have no savings. I pay £830 a year council tax. Should I be claiming anything?
A Certainly Council Tax Benefit. That would give you £9 a week. But how ill are you? If you were eligible for Disability Living Allowance this would give you more benefit and more help with council tax. Phone the Benefit Enquiry Line on 0800 88 2200 for more information.
Q I am 76, with a State Pension of £107.39 a week and a monthly works pension of £253. I have £3,603 in the bank. Can I get a reduction in my council tax of £55 a month?
A Yes, Council Tax Benefit of £1.60 a week.
Q I receive Incapacity Benefit, Income Support and Disability Living Allowance for mobility. Will these benefits be affected by the six to eight hours unpaid voluntary work I have just started? Should I tell anyone?
A Benefits will not be affected, as long as it is reasonable for you to give your services free of charge. If that is the case, there is no need to report it.
