A PRIMARY school has been given a good report by the Government's Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted).

Etherley Lane Primary School, in Bishop Auckland, was described by Ofsted inspectors as a very effective school.

They found the achievement of pupils was very good overall, with results in English, maths and science among the top five per cent in the country in recent years.

Pupils' behaviour and personal qualities were highlighted, and teaching was found to be very good.

Staff and governors have vowed to continue working to improve the school.

The provision of play areas and equipment for reception children and written records of health and safety checks were the only improvements suggested.

Chairman of governors John Bradley said: "I am delighted with the report, which I feel is a reflection of the hard work, dedication and professionalism of everyone associated with the school."
