Durham will promote Gareth Breese to open the innings in their first floodlit match of the season against Sussex at Hove tonight.

The Jamaican made a success of his first attempt at opening in the championship by scoring 75 against Glamorgan at Cardiff, last week.

Now he will move up to take over from injured Nicky Peng as Durham look to step up their promotion bid in the totesport League.

They moved up to third place with Sunday's win at Taunton, while Sussex are continuing last season's one-day form and lie next to the bottom.

Andrew Pratt will move up to number six in the order with either Graeme Bridge or Ian Pattison replacing Peng, which should strengthen the bowling.

Other than the economical Neil Killeen, Durham's bowling has been their weakness in the last two one-day games, with Mark Davies conceding 105 runs in 13 overs.

But coach Martyn Moxon said he had no fears about Davies starting to tire after heroics in the championship in which he has taken 42 wickets.

"Mark is just going through a bit of an uncertain period about the height of his jump in his delivery stride,'' he said.

"He has not quite got it right, but we have worked on it and he bowled beautifully in the nets at Hove today.

"There's no question of leaving him out - he has been one of the rocks of our one-day bowling for a while."
