A £400,000 revamp of the recycling centre at Carlin Howe Farm, near Loftus, is expected to make it one of the best in the region.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council is investing £200,000, with the Government's waste minimisation and recycling fund matching the figure, to turn the site into a modern refuse centre.

Wildlife will be protected as part of the scheme, with the newt barrier and fencing being realigned.

Councillor Bob Stanway, cabinet member for environmental improvement, said: "We are convinced that by enlarging this site, we are creating one of the best facilities around.

"The present site is restricted and is not large enough to help us reach very tough Government targets.

"Now we can provide a greater range of recyclables for domestic purposes so the council will be best placed to deliver its targets."

The council's cabinet is expected to formally agree the spending next week with planning consent granted by the end of August. The site should be fully operational by November.
