Detectives were studying security camera footage last night after a thief stole £1,500 and credit cards from the England cricket team's changing rooms.

The thief struck as the players were practising prior to yesterday's defeat by New Zealand at Durham's ground, in Chester-le-Street.

Wallets belonging to captain Michael Vaughan and Darren Gough were taken from the unlocked room.

The skipper lost £1,200 - money he had been paid to cover expenses - as well as a photograph of his baby, Tallulah, and a match ticket autographed by batsman Brian Lara to commemorate the West Indian's world record 400 not out against England.

Gough lost £300 as well as 17 credit and debit cards from his wallet.

The day-night game ended in an embarrassing seven-wicket defeat, with England only managing to score 101.

A Durham Police spokes-man said yesterday: "We are investigating the theft of two wallets from the dressing room being used by the England cricket team at Chester-le-Street's Riverside.

"The offences occurred at about 5.30pm on Monday while the team was practising on the pitch.

"The wallets contained a significant quantity of cash as well as credit cards and personal items.

"We are examining CCTV footage in the hope that we can identify the thief.

"While it would not be proper to comment on the detailed circumstances of the theft at this stage, we would urge all members of the public to take every care to protect their property, in particular valuables.

"If a thief is presented with an easy opportunity, he or she will take it."
