DARLINGTON manager David Hodgson has revealed how he had no hesitation in signing a new contract at the New Stadium following assurances the club were heading in the right direction.

On the same day the Quakers squad returned for pre-season training, Hodgson yesterday committed his future to the club by agreeing a new one-year rolling deal.

There were fears the Quakers boss could quit at the end of last season after expressing his concern at the way the club was being run.

But following the subsequent appointments of chief executive Andy Battison and commercial manager Bob Gorrill last month, Hodgson believes the club now has the infrastructure to move forward.

"The reason I accepted the terms was on the soul basis that the football club was ran on a professional basis," said Hodgson.

"I made it clear I would only commit to the on the understanding that day-to-day running of the club was conducted in the right way.

"The feedback from people who have had to deal with the club since has been positive, which I am very happy with.

"After speaking to Andy (Battison) it took me about ten seconds to agree terms."

And following talks with Battison, Hodgson put pen to paper on a rolling contract, with a minimum 12-month release clause, which both parties are entitled to exercise at any time.

Last night Battison welcomed Hodgson's decision to extend his stay with the club.

He said: "We are absolutely delighted that David has agreed a new contract.

"Everybody knows what a fantastic job he has done so it's great news for the club.

"These days five-year contracts are meaningless. The agreement we reached on Wednesday effectively means everyday creates a new one-year contract for David."

Hodgson reported a clean bill of health as he held his first pre-season training session in Richmond yesterday.

Sam Russell, Stephen Thomas and Joe Kendrick all trained with their new teammates. Former Middlesbrough defender Curtis Fleming is also training with the club after being released by Crystal Palace.

"I've managed to bring in three players and I would like another three in before the start of the season," said Hodgson.
