Darlington boss David Hodgson has signed former Middlesbrough midfielder Brian Close on a two-year deal.

Just 24 hours after Hodgson put pen to paper on a one-year rolling contract, Close has agreed to extend his stay with the club until 2006.

The Northern Ireland international joined Quakers on a free transfer in March after the Teessiders agreed to pay the remainder of the player's contract, which was due to expire this month.

And after helping Quakers avoid relegation last season, the versatile 22-year-old has been rewarded for his efforts.

"Brian is a player I like and that's why we've given him two years," said Hodgson. "He came in and did very well for us towards the end of last season and he will be an important player for us."

Released Quakers midfielder Gary Pearson has agreed a one-year deal with relegated York City.

The 27-year-old made just 12 starts for Quakers last season and was sent off twice.

However, Minstermen boss Chris Brass hopes Quakers' loss is City's gain as they aim for a quick return to the Football League next season.

Brass said: "He's somebody who will keep everybody on their toes. He got suspended at Darlington and could not get back into the team but he's got a lot to offer and knows it's a make-or-break season for him.

"He's a utility man who can play anywhere and we will be using him to fill in wherever we need."

Midfielder Ashley Nicholls has agreed a two-year deal with Cambridge United, subject to a medical.

"I'm glad everything's gone through smoothly," said Nicholls.
