WORK has started on a large-scale biodiesel plant that is expected to establish green fuel as a major industry in the region.

Biofuels Corporation, which listed on the Alternative Investment Market on June 17 to raise capital for the £21m Teesside plant, said its two main contractors, Energea and Seal Sands Storage (SSS), had started work.

The plant will develop renewable and greener fuels from crops such as oilseed rape. It is expected to create 75 jobs directly and 200 indirectly.

SSS is providing road, rail and pipeline connections for the site, and the contract allows Biofuels use of storage and deep water port facilities for at least 30 years, while Energea is building the plant.

It is expected to be completed by the beginning of next year.

Biodiesel from the Teesside plant will be blended with mineral diesel and sold by independent fuel distributors and supermarkets.

It is hoped the 250,000 tonne complex, which will be the largest in Europe, will help the Tees Valley become the UK's leading area for green fuels and renewable energy.
