Police are investigating an assault on a two-week-old baby boy from Hartlepool.
He is currently in the intensive care unit of the James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, where his condition has been described as critical.
Police were alerted in the early hours of Sunday by the staff at the University Hospital of Hartlepool and the baby was later transferred to the James Cook Hospital.
It is believed he had been badly shaken.
A 20-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man have been arrested and are currently helping police with their enquiries.
