HISTORY, art and music will combine to attract thousands of visitors to a People's Carnival.

Scarborough Castle will host the family fun day of theatre, art workshops, story-telling and crafts on Saturday.

Organisers said it would be bigger and better than the first carnival, held last year, which attracted 5,500 people.

The event is run by Scarborough's SureStart Parent Network, which aims to bring the community together for a day of entertainment.

Vice-chairwoman Tamzin Sykes said they wanted to give children a good day out.

She said: "We want families to have the chance to spend the least possible amount of money and enjoy the most possible fun.

"The Parent Network is again thrilled to be working with English Heritage on this year's event and we are very grateful for their support."

This event, from 11am to 5pm, will be opened by a carnival prince and princess, winners of a prize draw open to SureStart registered families. They will be helped by local Labour MP Lawrie Quinn
