A COUNCIL is launching a survey of gravestones to see if any are in a dangerous condition.
The inspection will be carried out at cemeteries and churchyards controlled by Sunderland City Council.
Memorials in immediate danger of collapse will be laid flat or partially buried so that they remain upright.
The council will try to contact the owners of gravestones that need repairs but are not a hazard so that they can hire a professional mason to carry out the work.
A spokesman for the council said: "A memorial remains the property of the grave owner or their heir, who are legally responsible for its maintenance and safety."
The council may take action to ensure the long-term stability of a grave or memorial if it cannot find surviving family members. For more details, call the cemeteries office on 0191-553 1687
