A murder investigation was launched today when the blood-stained body of a woman was found in a bungalow.

The woman, in her 30s, was treated by paramedics in the early hours of yesterday but was pronounced dead.

Police and ambulance crews attended a bungalow in Craghead, near Stanley, County Durham, following a 999 call around 4.30am.

A man in his 50s was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham and was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Forensic experts were combing the area yesterday for clues and officers were carrying out house-to-house inquiries in the Palm Terrace area of the village.

A spokesman for Durham Police said: "The body of a woman was discovered in the bedroom of a semi-detached bungalow following an emergency call in the early hours.

"A post mortem is due to be carried out to determine the cause of death. The victim is yet to be formerly identified."

A knife was recovered by officers at the scene and police yesterday appealed for witnesses to come forward.
