MIDDLESBROUGH are ready to make a shock move for Gary Speed as Newcastle move nearer to the capture of Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt, writes SCOTT WILSON.

Newcastle hope to complete Butt's £3.75m move from Old Trafford by the end of the week and, while United have been quick to stress that Speed remains a part of their plans, they are reluctantly resigned to losing the services of the Wales international.

The 34-year-old is desperate to see out his playing career at St James' Park but, with Butt, Jermaine Jenas and Lee Bowyer set to battle it out for the central midfield positions next season, his first-team chances are likely to be limited.

Speed was a virtual ever-present as United finished fifth in the Premiership last season, but it is unlikely he would be called upon as often for the forthcoming campaign.

Fulham have been leading the chase for a player who can boast more Premiership appearances than any other, but Middlesbrough are ready to make a last-ditch attempt to keep him in the North-East.

The Teessiders are believed to have held preliminary discussions with Speed's agent and are ready to up their attempts to take him to the Riverside.

Brazilian midfielder Doriva signed a new one-year deal with Boro earlier this summer but, with Jonathan Greening being repeatedly linked with a move to West Brom, Steve McClaren's side remain short of cover at the heart of midfield.

Speed's vast international experience would also be seen as a major asset as Boro prepare to play on a European stage for the first time.

Fulham are continuing to monitor the situation, but the Cottagers would be unable to match the kind of financial package likely to be put on the table by Boro.

Chris Coleman is a long-standing admirer of Speed, but the Fulham boss has his hands tied as the London club look to balance the books on their return to Craven Cottage.

Speed has spent the last two days in pre-season training with the Magpies, and the veteran midfielder is expected to make a decision on his future before United depart for their pre-season tour of the Far East this weekend.

l Newcastle goalkeeper Tony Caig has signed a new one-year deal at St James' Park.

United's third-choice stopper has yet to play a first-team game since signing from Hibs in 2002.
