A SHEET metal fabricator is boosting productivity thanks to energy-saving measures.

Tharsus, in Hebburn, South Tyneside, relied on out-dated equipment in its paint finishing process, preventing it from increasing production.

South Tyneside Business Energy Efficiency Services (Bees) has helped the company secure an interest-free loan to buy equipment.

This included two paint-curing ovens.

Bees secured the loan through Action Energy, which supports energy-efficient projects for businesses.

Bees is a partnership between South Tyneside Council and environmental group Groundwork.

Because the new paint machinery increased capacity and employment opportunities at the plant, Tharsus also became eligible for a business support grant from the council.

Councillor Eddie McAtominey, lead member for corporate development, said: "It is encouraging to see companies investing in achieving greater productivity for the future of those who work in them now, and hopefully in greater numbers in the future."

Tharsus Engineering, which supplies companies including BT, Caterpillar and Ericsson, plans to double its production over the next four years.

Brian Palmer, managing director, said: "The upgrade of the paint shop equipment represents a substantial investment, so we are thankful South Tyneside Council and Bees stepped in and secured funding for us."
