A GRADUATE has won a national award in an examination for taxation professionals.

Liz Rees, 24, from Hurworth, was one of nearly 500 people from across the country who entered this year's Association of Taxation Technicians examinations.

She was awarded the LexisNexis Prize for obtaining the highest total mark in the taxation papers.

Miss Rees will receive her award at the House of Lords in November.

A former pupil at Hurworth Comprehensive School, she spent two years at Yarm School before going to the University of Newcastle, where she took a business management degree.

After working for BT and travelling in Australia, she joined KPMG, in Newcastle, as a graduate trainee.

She spent five months training at Canary Wharf in London before returning to the North-East.

Her mother, Rita, said: "She loves figures and she loves taxation, so we were all over the moon when we heard the news."
