Turnaround, trained by Lynda Ramsden, is proving to be the best birthday present Wynyard owner Joe Musgrave has ever received and raced to victory in style in the EBF Thomas Lord Maiden Stakes at Thirsk on Saturday.

An odds-on chance, having finished third and second respectively in his first two races, Turnaround was sent into the lead inside the final furlong by Ian Mongan who rode him out to the line to beat Carnivore by two and a half lengths.

German-bred Turnaround, cost 40,000 euros as a yearling, and Mrs Ramsden said: "He was a 70th birthday present for Mr Musgrave.

"We took the horse to Sedgefield during the winter and his family gave him to Mr Musgrave there - but it is not his first horse, he had New Mexican who was useful.

"Turnaround won the way you like to see them winning - Ian said it took a long time to pull him up, he enjoyed the ground and will be better over six furlongs."

Paul Hanagan is making up for lost time following a couple of suspensions and he completed a double on Richard Fahey's Wise Wager in the nursery and the Neville Bycroft-trained Efidium in the Ekos Consulting Handicap and then headed for Hamilton where he rode another winner.

Fahey could not have been happier watching Wise Wager oblige, and he explained: "When she ran for the first time I owned her, but then she was bought by John Rhodes and Peter Timmins and I told them she would win a race.

"I was getting a bit worried as she had been placed three times since and they have been a bit unlucky, so I needed that and Paul gave her a good ride."

Fahey soon struck again when Opening Ceremony, ridden by apprentice Tony Hamilton won the £30,000 Weatherbys Handicap at Doncaster, ironically just touching off Bycroft's Tedsdale Mac.

Bycroft had landed a double at Beverley earlier in the week and he said: "Efidium is a very consistent horse, he likes a strong pace and here and Redcar seem to suit him."

Kelly Harrison, daughter of Middleham-based former trainer and now jockeys' agent Alan Harrison, landed the Whitby Selling Handicap (Ladies Race) for the second year running, this time on her boss Dandy Nicholls's Zietzig, who was retained without a bid.

There was a panic before the race as officials realised that they did not have enough lead to put in the saddles so that the jockeys could carry the correct weights, and they had to send someone hotfoot to Ripon racecourse to get some more supplies.

John Parkes keeps his stable's loyal servant Best Port ready, willing and able and the gallant eight-year-old was too good for his rivals under apprentice Mark Lawson in the Richmond Castle Handicap.

Parkes said: "He is a grand old horse, fast ground is the key to him, I always said I would like to win ten races with him and that is nine now - and hopefully he will make it ten at Redcar next weekend."

Luke Fletcher was suspended for one day (August 11) for using his whip with his arm above shoulder height on Moonshine Beach.
