A POOR performance in Germany on Saturday gave Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren something to mull over after a full-strength side lost 3-1 to Hansa Rostock.

Featuring all of their summer signings, the Teessiders were dominated by the Germans who deserved a win that should keep Boro supporters' pre-season optimism in check.

And an injury to new boy Michael Reiziger added to the misery for McClaren as the Dutch international was taken off with a shoulder problem.

Middlesbrough, whose only goal came late on from Joseph-Desire Job, will be hoping for a better showing on Wednesday evening when they play hosts to Real Mallorca.

Boro were given a rough ride early on as their hosts forced several opportunities.

The visitors were level at half-time although the game, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Ostseestadion ground, almost saw a goal in the first 30 seconds as a mix-up between Mark Schwarzer and Ugo Ehiogu presented Antonio Di Salvo with a great scoring opportunity but he put his shot off target.

Reiziger went down midway through the first half and received lengthy treatment before being replaced by Tony McMahon.

But the right-back was able to watch the remainder of the game from the sidelines.

Nine minutes into the second period, Hansa Rostock opened the scoring after capitalising on Boro's inability to clear a free-kick, Madsen taking advantage to fire home.

With 25 minutes to play McClaren introduced seven substitutes, including Juninho, Slizard Nemeth and Job, and it wasn't long before the Cameron international had the ball in the net but it was ruled out for offside.

Despite the changes Boro still struggled and Hanstock doubled their lead with 12 minutes to play, Rydlewicz converting a penalty after Ray Parlour brought down David Rasmussen.

With time ticking away, three Boro subs combined to reduce the arrears with McMahon playing in Nemeth who in turn put Job through to score.

But it was Hanstock who had the last word in the final minute as Rasmussen crossed from the right for Meggle to head past Nash.

Boro: Schwarzer (Nash 65), Reiziger (McMahon 19), Queudrue, Parlour, Ehiogu, Southgate (Riggott 65), Boateng (Doriva 65), Viduka (Job 65), Hasselbaink (Juninho 65), Mendieta (Nemeth 65), Zenden (Downing 65).
