POLICE hope a disco for young people will prove a sound investment following the success of a trial night earlier in the summer.

The event is aimed at providing summer holiday fun for youngsters in Durham's Belmont and Carrville areas.

A disco for the 11 to 16 age range was held at Belmont Club in June and will be repeated tomorrow.

More than 100 young people attended the first event, and many asked organisers for it to be repeated. Beat officer PC Gordon Stuart said if there was a similar response tomorrow, there might be an opportunity to hold another disco later in the summer.

Food is included in the £2 admission charge, payable at the door. Proceeds will go to Carrville Residents' Association.

The club is in the High Street, Carrville, just behind the Jennings Ford showroom.

The initiative is one of many staged across the Durham force area as part of the StreetSafe campaign, designed to improve the quality of life for local communities.

PC Stuart said: "During the school holidays we get lots of complaints about young people being involved in anti-social behaviour

"The disco is just one way of giving kids in Belmont and Carrville somewhere to go on the long summer evenings, and stop them getting bored."

Doors will be open shortly before 7pm tomorrow, with the disco running to 10pm.

Alcohol will not be allowed.
