PLANS to demolish a former police building and replace it with 36 apartments will be discussed tomorrow.

Stockton Borough Council's planning committee has received a planning application to build the one and two-bedroomed apartments on land between High Church Wynd and The Old Market, in Yarm.

Nineteen residents have objected to the plans because of fears over congestion, loss of privacy and parking problems.

Objections have also been received from Yarm Town Council which agrees with residents and says there is insufficient parking allocation, roads are unsuitable for heavy construction traffic and that it would increase congestion.

A report to the meeting said: "The proposal involves the demolition of the former police building, a wall, garage and some trees.

"Whilst the historic buildings officer and English Heritage would prefer this building remains, it is not a listed building and its removal is necessary for the scheme as a whole to proceed.

"The new building is also designed to reflect the architecture of the police building and the development of the site to remove an area of scrubland for the benefit of the conservation area as a whole outweighs its demolition.

"The application is therefore recommended for approval."
